Orvis Hot Springs Minerals & their Benefits
Our natural hot springs benefit from their location in a mineral-rich valley below the rocky peaks of the San Juan and Cimarron Mountains. The following minerals from our water sources can contribute in many ways to enhancing the body’s functions* and activating physical and psychological healing processes.
Lithium
From the Greek word for stone, “lithos”, Lithium is probably the most famous element in the hot springs water at Orvis. Many of our guests believe the small quantities of lithium in the water create a mood of tranquility. Lithium is known for its calming and mood stabilizing effect, and is used to treat depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia.
The Lithium concentration in our natural spring water is 1.67 to 1.71 milligrams per liter.
Sulfur
From the Sanskrit word “sulvere” and the Latin word “sulphurium”, Sulfur is the 10th most abundant element in the universe. However, as your nose will tell you, the water at Orvis has a very low sulfur content. Sulfur is essential in ridding poisons from the body, and is important in the health of the fluids in joints and vertebra discs.
The Sulfur concentration in our natural spring water is 1130 to 1200 milligrams per liter.
Calcium
From the Latin word for lime, “calz”, Calcium is needed for bones, cartilage and nerve and muscle functioning. Calcium is the fifth most abundant element in the earth’s crust. It is never found free in nature since it forms compound by reacting with water and oxygen. As a result, Calcium increases oxygen flow and improves blood circulation.
The Calcium concentration in the natural spring water at Orvis is 280 to 305 milligrams per liter.
Potassium
From the English word “potash”, Potassium can be found in minerals most often associated with ancient lakes and sea beds. Potassium aids with hydration in many ways such as healing dry skin conditions, and improves nerve and internal organ function.
The Potassium concentration in Orvis Hot Springs is 34.1 to 36.3 milligrams per liter.
Manganese
From the Latin word for magnet, “magnes”, Manganese is known for its many health benefits when taken in the proper small doses. Soaking in the amounts found in the water at Orvis may have similar effects such as improving metabolism and digestion, maintaining thyroid health and bone density, and reducing inflammation.
The Manganese concentration in our natural spring water is .010 to .147 milligrams per liter.
Magnesium
From Magnesia, the name of a district in the region of Thessaly, Greece, Magnesium is the eighth most abundant element in the universe. Mostly found in sea water (12 billion pounds per cubic mile), it is never found free in nature. Magnesium is needed to utilize carbohydrates properly, make our own protein from amino acids and maintain muscles and hormones.
The Magnesium concentration in the hot springs water at Orvis is 19.4 to 21 milligrams per liter.
Flourine
From the Latin and French words for flow, “fluere”, Fluorine is added to many municipal water sources to help prevent tooth decay, but is naturally occurring in the hot springs water at Orvis. Small amounts of fluorine are a natural antiseptic, so can shield the body from infections.
The Flourine concentration in our hot springs water is 4.20 to 4.44 milligrams per liter.
